TYPES OF MANAGERIAL APPRAISAL
Managerial Appraisals are mainly of two types:
(1) Initial Appraisal
(2) Promotion Appraisal
1. Initial Appraisal:
Initial appraisal means the appraisal that is made at the time of appointment of an executive. The primary objective of this appraisal is to evaluate whether the person concerned is suitable for a particular post or not. The other objective is to allow the right job for the executive appointed in the enterprise. Every managerial executive appointed in the enterprise has to face this type of appraisal.
2. Promotion Appraisal:
Promotional appraisal means the appraisal used at the time of promotion of present managerial executives to higher posts. There are three types of managerial levels in every enterprise. Top-level management, medium-level management and lower-level management. From this point of view promotional appraisal may again be divided into the following two parts:
(a) Appraisal of lower-level and middle managerial authorities:
Generally, new appointments in an enterprise are made at the lower levels of management. Gradually, the ability, efficiency and experience of managerial executives of lower level increases and they deserve to the promoted to the levels of middle management. This type of promotional appraisal helps in evaluating the ability and efficiency of the managerial executives of lower levels from the point of view of promoting them to the middle level.
(b) Appraisal of top-level management authorities:
This type of appraisal iS required to evaluate the ability and efficiency of present top-level managerial executives in relation to the nature and responsibility of the job. It aims at evaluating whether they are capable to the posts they are holding or not.
