MEANING AND OBJECTIVES OF INDUCTION OR ORIENTATION

MEANING OF PLACEMENT OR ORIENTATION

Induction means the introduction of newly appointed employees to their job, to their fellow workers, and to the organization. It is a process through which newly appointed employees are provided an opportunity to be familiar with their job and with their organizations so that they may not feel any difficulty in discharging their duties properly and efficiently. Therefore, most organizations offer some kind of induction or orientation. Instead of leaving a new employee to stumble his way through the organization, it is better to introduce him systematically to the company, its policies, etc., and his position in the company.

Induction or orientation has been defined as follows:

“Orientation is a program designed to help new employees get acquainted with the company and make a productive beginning on the job.”

Wendell Fench,

"Orientation is the process of receiving and welcoming an employee when he first joins the company and giving him the basic information. He needs to settle down quickly and happily and start work."

Michael Armstrong,

“An orientation program familiarises new employees with their roles, the organization, its policies, and other employees.”

William Werther and Keith Davis,

"Orientation covers the activities involved in introducing a new employee to the organization and to his work unit.”

Stephen Robbins and David Decenzo,

Thus, orientation or induction depends upon the information received during the recruitment and selection stages and helps to reduce the initial anxiety which all employees feel when they first begin a new job.

OBJECTIVES OF INDUCTION OR ORIENTATION
