MEANING AND DEFINITION OF JOB ANALYSIS


Job Analysis combination of two words Job and Analysis. A Job is the combination of all types of work duties and responsibilities assigned to an employee relating to his employment. Analysis means a process of deep examination. Thus, the term, 'Job Analysis' may be regarded as a process of deep examination of the duties, responsibilities, and works relating to a particular job. It is a complete and thorough knowledge of the responsibilities and requirements of a particular job. 


The term 'Job Analysis' has been defined as follows:


“Job Analysis is the process of studying and collecting  information relating to the operations and responsibilities of a specific job.”   

Edwin B. Flippo,  


“Job Analysis is the process of examining a job to identify its component parts and the circumstances in which it is performed.”

 Ministry of Labour and Industrial Training Board, England,


“Job Analysis is the methodical compilation and study of work data in order to define and characterize each occupation in such a manner as to distinguish it from all others.”

“Job Analysis refers to the process of studying the operations, duties and organizational aspects of jobs in order to derive specifications or as they are called by some job descriptions.”

The information ascertained from the job analysis are:

  • What does a worker do, 
  • What are the requirements of the job, 
  • What is the nature of the job - mechanical or manual,
  • What sort of skills are required for the job and
  • What are the physical, social, and intellectual demands of the job? 

The answer of all these questions will provide the basis for the selection of the right man for the right job.
