There are very few people who are ready to lay down their lives for the country, one of them Vikram Batra who was born on 9 September 1974 in Palampur village of Himachal Pradesh.  Vikram Batra, whose father was the principal of a government school, while his mother was a school teacher.

Vikram completed his early studies from DAV Public School, after that took admission in Kendriya Vidyalaya for further studies.  All India KVS I Vikram represented the Nationals Table Tennis School with his brother and won it.  He is very active during his college days due to which he joined NCC Air Wing and got 40 days training at Pinjore Airfield and Flying Club.  When he was selected for training, he qualified for the C certificate and was commissioned as a Captain in the NCC.

Patriotism towards the country took birth in his heart when he participated in the Republic Day parade as an NCC cadet in 1994 and he told his parents about his desire to join the Indian Army.  Due to which, during his college days in 1995, he was selected as Merchant Navy by the Hong Kong-headquartered shipping company, but he had different intentions.

 During his college studies, he took admission in Panjab University which is located in Chandigarh to pursue MA and started preparing for Combined Defense Services examination.  Along with studies, he joined a travel agency as a part time job where he worked as a branch manager.  He gave the CDS exam in 1996, after which he got selected in the Services Selection Board of Allahabad.  Some 35 candidates were elected there, out of which 1 name was Vikram Batra.  The patriotism towards India had increased so much that he thought it right to leave college and join the Indian Military Academy.

 Captain Vikram Batra joined Manekshaw Battalion IMA in 1996.  After that, on 6 December 1997, he completed his 19 months of training, after which he obtained a bachelor's degree from IMA.  After his training was completed, he was commissioned with the 13th Battalion as a lieutenant by the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles.  He was again sent to Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh during training for one month.

 After completion of their training, they were shifted to Sopore in Baramulla district, Jammu and Kashmir, an area where terrorist activity was rampant.  After that his training did not stop there, he was sent to Infantry School Mhow for a period of 5 months to complete the Young Officer Course.  When his course was completed, he was awarded alpha grading and was sent back to the Jammu Battalion to serve the country.

 He met his fiancee Dimple Cheema at his favorite cafe when he went to his home during the Holi holidays before the Kargil war.  At that time Dimple was worried a lot about Vikram, so he asked Vikram to take care of himself during the Kargil war.  The only thing that came out of that hero's mouth was that either I would come waving the tricolor of my victory or I would come blindly wrapped in that tricolor.

 His valor was something that played an important role in the Kargil war of 1999.  After completing his leave, when he came back to Sopore to join his battalion, his battalion was asked to move towards Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh.  Vikram Batra had completed his tenure in Jammu to eliminate terrorists under the 192 Mountain Brigade of his battalion 8 Mountain Division.  So he and his battalion were ordered to leave.


The Pak Army had built strong fortifications in the sector against the Indian Army which has reinforced automatic weapons.  During this war, on 20 June 1999, Captain Vikram Batra of Commander Delta Company was assigned the responsibility of attacking Point 5140 during Operation VIJAY.  Captain Vikram Batra, with his entire company from the east, attacked them without even realizing the enemy and entered their territory.  Reorganizing his squad, he proceeded to attack the enemy positions.


At that time, Captain Vikram was leading his squad and with great fearlessness in the forefront, he went on attacking the enemy territory.  During the attack they killed 4 students.  Despite the area in which the enemy was very inaccessible, he destroyed the enemies and went to their radio station and announced his victory.


Following the bravery of Captain Vikram Batra, this operation was also entrusted to Vikram and his contingent.  The road that spoiled this campaign was also very difficult because it had steep slopes on both sides and was the only road completely blocked by the enemies.  Despite this, the Captain decided to attack after reaching the enemy's hideout with all his enthusiasm and squad, passing through the narrow road.  During that attack, five enemies were killed by Vikram Batra and his team at Point Black Range.

 During the Kargil war, Vikram Batra had suffered very deep wounds, yet he did not give up and threw large grenades at the enemy while crawling.  Due to the grenade thrown by Vikram Batra, the entire area of ​​the enemies was destroyed and all the enemies were killed.  Even after his deep wounds, Vikram did not give up and inspired his army to move forward and attack the enemies, but due to his deep wounds and due to heavy firing, he gave up his life at the same place in the battle field.  .  In this way he attained martyrdom but kept fighting for the country till his last breath.

 Point 4785 was captured by Vikram Batra and his team, after which the mountain was historically named Batra Top.

 Discussions of his valor were also in Jabalpur, during which a cantonment of Jabalpur was named Vikram Batra Enclave.

 Due to his exploits, he earned a lot of name in Allahabad too, after which a hall was named Vikram Batra Block.

 During his trial in IMA also, he played his heroic story there too, due to which a mess was named Vikram Batra Mess.

 Due to the courage and sacrifice of Vikram Batra and his team, a building named after him has been erected at DAV College, Chandigarh.

 In 2019, Maqbara Chowk and its flyover in Delhi were renamed as Shaheed Captain Vikram Batra to honor Vikram Batra.

 Vikram Batra was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra by the Government of India for the bravery with which he attained Veergati by showing his skill in the war for the country of India.
